Turnstile Mechanism Design

A turnstile machine(turnstile mechanism design) is a gate that allows authorized personnel to enter in a controlled, or uncontrolled mode. It can be found in stadiums as well as amusement parks, mass transportation stations, office lobbies, and many other places that require access control.

The Turnstile Hub

Turnstiles are an excellent way to control traffic in high-traffic areas such as stadiums and transportation hubs. The core of a turntile is a mechanism that includes a hub that rotates and gate or barrier arms that attach to the hub. The gate arms are able to rotate or swing, allowing entry or exit through a passageway. The hub can be manually moved by using a button or other method to move from a locked to an unlocked state.

When a person presents valid credentials, the turnstile can unlock and open the gate arm, door, or other barrier. Access control monitors and controls the flow of traffic. The system may be programmed only to allow entry from one direction or to permit exit at any moment.

Some turnstiles have a heel protector or other protective device. A heel guard is a padded sleeve that fits over the lowest arms of a full height turnstile to protect against heel injuries. Optional accessories include a self closing mechanism that ensures the gate will close even if the reader is not in use. Another option is a stainless steel top cover that hides the locking mechanism and provides an attractive appearance.

The Turnstile Arms

The turnstile arms are an important part of the overall turnstile mechanism(turnstile mechanism design) . They are designed for pedestrian passage through the gates, and must be able resist the constant impact caused by passing people.

They can be used in conjunction with a variety of identity verification systems, such as contactless smart cards, bar code, fingerprint, facial recognition, and intercom. Usually, they are combined with software to form an access control system which can complete the functions for access control and attendance, charge administration, and ticketing system.

To achieve this, they need to be able accurately to recognize pedestrians as they pass and judge if they have entered lawfully. The Ratchet Plate

The ratchet plate is the part of the turntable that connects to the ratchet wheel. This prevents it from moving further backward than the limit set up by the spacing of teeth. The ratchet plate also includes a pawl that bears against the surface of the ratchet gear at an angle to reduce the amount of backward movement.

This design eliminates need for castle nuts to be installed after fitting. The ratchet system is a one-piece design ratched arm and tooth, machined into the anti rotation plates themselves, paired with a castle nut that registers the radially machined grooves with the spring-like arm and ratchet teeth, allowing for the ratchet’s retention in place. The ratchet cannot vibrate loose through firing, but can be removed with an armorers wrench if necessary.

The ratcheting pressure plating system comes in six sizes, to suit different indications. The leg lengths vary from 11 to 25 millimeters and the plate bridges from 15-30 millimeters. During biomechanical testing the ratcheting pressure plate performed comparably with a competitive bone staple on all tested parameters, including initial compression and retention, four-point bent, and cycle loading.

The Solenoid (turnstile mechanism design)

A solenoid converts electrical energy to linear motion. It is a cylinder of copper wire that has multiple turns. When current flows through the coil, it creates magnetic field lines that appear around its outer perimeter. When a magnet moves close to the coil these magnetic field lines converge toward its center, like the lines of force on a magnetic compasses. This principle allows the magnetic field to be used to control a turnstile’s arm movement.

Turnstiles(turnstile mechanism design) arms are commonly used in high-volume transit zones to allow only one person to enter the area at a single time and to prevent people exiting without paying. Patrons can cause the mechanism to jam or be damaged by applying sideways force on the turnstile hub and arm. To address this, powerful unlocking solenoids are usually provided in the mechanism.

A safety sleeve may be placed on the arms to reduce the sideways forces and to improve comfort and ease of use for children or elderly people. It can also help prevent injuries due to the sharp ends. This sleeve may also be used with facial recognition software in order to verify that a person is authorized to enter. This can reduce the workload of staff and lower operating costs.
